Crape%20Myrtle%20Bark%20Scale (Eriococcus%20lagerstroemiae) - The%20crape%20myrtle%20bark%20scale%20was%20first%20confirmed%20in%20the%20USA%20in%202004%20in%20the%20landscape%20near%20Dallas%20%28TX%29%2C%20although%20it%20was%20likely%20introduced%20earlier.%20The%20scale%20is%20a%20sucking%20insect%20that%20feeds%20on%20the%20phloem%20%28sap%29%20of%20plants.%20As%20it%20feeds%2C%20it%20excretes%20a%20sugary%20solution%20known%20as%20%E2%80%9Choneydew%E2%80%9D%20%28similar%20to%20aphids%2C%20whiteflies%2C%20and%20other%20sucking%20insects%29.%20Heavy%20infestations%20of%20crape%20myrtle%20bark%20scale%20produce%20sufficient%20honeydew%20to%20coat%20leaves%2C%20stems%20and%20bark%20of%20the%20tree.%20This%20honeydew%2C%20in%20turn%2C%20will%20eventually%20turn%20black%20as%20it%20is%20colonized%20by%20a%20concoction%20of%20fungi%2C%20called%20sooty%20mold.
