Cedar%20Hawthorn%20Rust (Gymnosporangium%20juniperi-virginiana) - Cedar%20hawthorn%20rust%20is%20caused%20by%20a%20fungal%20pathogen%2C%20Gymnosporangium%20juniperi-virginianae.%20%20This%20fungus%20must%20spend%20a%20phase%20of%20its%20life%20cycle%20on%20both%20the%20red%20cedar%20and%20apple%20%28or%20crabapple%20tree%29.%20%20Gymnosporangium%20form%20galls%20on%20the%20cedar.%20%20Typically%20these%20galls%20grow%20on%20the%20cedar%20for%202%20years.%20%20In%20the%20spring%2C%20matured%20galls%20will%20produce%20bright%20orange%20soft%20tendrils%2C%20known%20as%20telial%20horns%20or%20spore%20horns.%20%20Spores%20formed%20on%20the%20cedar%20are%20transmitted%20to%20the%20apple%20tree%20via%20air%20currents.%20%20After%20disease%20occurs%20on%20the%20apple%20tree%20for%20a%20period%20of%20time%2C%20small%20whitish%20paper-like%20tubular%20projections%20can%20appear%20on%20the%20underside%20of%20leaves%20or%20on%20the%20fruit.%20%20These%20structures%20are%20called%20aecia%20and%20will%20produce%20spores%20that%20will%20infect%20the%20red%20cedar%20and%20form%20new%20galls.%20%20These%20spores%20will%20not%20reinfect%20apples.
