Southern%20Pine%20Beetle (Dendroctonus%20frontalis) - The%20southern%20pine%20beetle%20%28SPB%29%2C%20%283%20mm%29%2C%20invasive%20insect%20that%20is%20native%20to%20southeastern%20states%20and%20is%20the%20most%20destructive%20insect%20pest%20of%20their%20forests.%20Its%20range%20extends%20from%20New%20Jersey%20to%20Florida%20to%20Texas%20to%20Illinois.%20The%20SPB%20must%20kill%20its%20host%20pines%20to%20reproduce%2C%20and%20attacks%20trees%20collectively.%20The%20SPB%20causes%20significant%20and%20rapid%20economic%20losses%20in%20all%20forest%20types%2C%20including%20traditional%20forests%2C%20urban%20forests%2C%20watersheds%20and%20viewsheds%2C%20and%20negatively%20impacts%20habitat%20for%20endangered%20species%20and%20recreational%20areas.%20In%20addition%2C%20human%20safety%20and%20property%20are%20threatened%20by%20SPB-killed%20trees%2C%20which%20may%20be%20susceptible%20to%20fire%20and%20whose%20removal%20costs%20usually%20exceed%20the%20tree%27s%20value.
