Hypoxylon%20Canker%20%28Oak%29 (Biscogniauxia%20atropunctata) - Hypoxylon%20canker%20is%20a%20fungus%20that%20causes%20cankers%20and%20death%0D%0Aof%20oak%20and%20other%20hardwood%20trees.%20The%20disease%20is%20common%0D%0Ain%20East%20Texas%20and%20all%20across%20the%20southern%20United%20States.%0D%0ARelatively%20healthy%20trees%20are%20not%20invaded%20by%20the%20fungus%2C%20but%0D%0Athe%20hypoxylon%20fungus%20will%20readily%20infect%20the%20sapwood%20of%20a%0D%0Atree%20that%20has%20been%20damaged%2C%20stressed%2C%20or%20weakened.%20Natural%20and%20man-caused%20factors%20that%20can%20weaken%20a%20tree%20include%0D%0Adefoliation%20by%20insects%20or%20leaf%20fungi%2C%20saturated%20soil%2C%20fill%20dirt%2C%0D%0Asoil%20compaction%2C%20excavation%20in%20the%20root%20zone%20of%20the%20tree%2C%20removal%20of%20top%20soil%20under%20the%20tree%2C%20disease%2C%20herbicide%20injury%2C%0D%0Adrought%2C%20heat%2C%20nutrient%20deficiencies%2C%20competition%20or%20overcrowding%2C%20and%20other%20factors.%20The%20hypoxylon%20fungus%20is%20considered%20a%20weak%20pathogen%20in%20that%20it%20is%20not%20aggressive%20enough%0D%0Ato%20invade%20healthy%20trees.%20In%20addition%20to%20the%20hypoxylon%20fungus%2C%20weakened%20and%20stressed%20trees%20may%20become%20susceptible%0D%0Ato%20a%20host%20of%20other%20insect%20and%20disease%20pests.
