Cottonwood%20Borer (Plectrodera%20scalator) - The%20cottonwood%20borer%20is%20a%20common%20wood%20borer%20of%20cottonwood%20and%20poplars%20and%20infests%20the%20bases%20and%20roots%20of%20living%20trees.%20The%20insect%20is%20widely%20distributed%20throughout%20the%20eastern%20United%20States%20and%20the%20Midwest%3B%20however%2C%20it%20is%20most%20common%20in%20the%20Great%20Plains%20from%20Texas%20to%20South%20Dakota%20and%20throughout%20the%20Mississippi%20River%20Valley.%20Within%20Colorado%2C%20the%20cottonwood%20borer%20is%20restricted%20to%20the%20southeastern%20portion%20of%20the%20state.%20The%20adult%20is%20an%20elongate%2C%20robust%2C%20strikingly%20patterned%20beetle%20that%20is%20approximately%201-1%203%2F4%20inches%20%282.5-4.4%20cm%29%20long%20and%201%2F2%20inch%20wide.%20Mature%20larvae%20are%20approximately%202%20inches%20long%2C%20and%20the%20pupa%20is%20approximately%201%201%2F2%20inches%20long.
